Bad Friends & Joel Dangerous

Bad Friends Biography
Bad Friends is a four-piece rock band out of Des Moines, Iowa. Influenced and raised on the sounds of 90's and 2000's, they have fashioned a unique blend of alternative, indie and pop. Eric McCoy's crisp vocals cut through resident shoegazer Alex Rooney's wall of sound, created through layered and effects-laden guitar. Drew Davis (bass) and Doug Meyer (drums) head up the driving rhythm section, adept at lulling you into a groove one minute and getting your heart racing the next. Their debut EP will be released on September 27, 2014. In the fall of 2012, guitarist Alex Rooney and drummer Doug Meyer began demoing songs the two had collaborated on over the span of many months prior. With no settled practice space, the two began to flesh out the ideas in Rooney’s basement, equipped with a loop pedal and drum machine. It marked the first project for each of them since being members of the same band during their college years at Iowa State University. At first, the foundation of their sound was marked by acoustic, melodic phrases and electronic drums, but they soon found that the new material being written would require a band to fully realize it’s potential. Alex recruited Eric McCoy to sing vocals, as the two were involved in a side project and had cultivated a unique sound which they wanted to explore further. Childhood friend Drew Davis would join the band on bass soon after, and the Bad Friends lineup was set. The band began rehearsing and played their first show in spring of 2013. By summer, they released a two-song demo recorded with Logan Christian at Midday Studios. In the fall of 2013 the band began writing material for their debut EP and returned to Midday in the spring of 2014 to record with mixing and mastering completed in the summer. Dan Braak, a guitarist for Minneapolis-based band The Usual Things, was soon added as the fifth member, adding backing guitar to enhance the performance of live shows. After a brief hiatus while Davis was studying abroad, the band returned to the stage in Nevada, IA at Dangerfest IV, performing along with other local acts Mighty Shady, Doctor Murdock and Viva Montesa. On September 30, 2014, their self-titled EP was released at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines, IA. Bad Friends can be purchased digitally on BandCamp and iTunes and is streaming on Spotify. Hard copies are available through the band or locally in Des Moines at Beaverdale Books. |
